MM Links Solutions June 2007 [Week 1}

I can now reveal the chosen Link Words of gen2 and they are:

Ground SWELL
FARM Yard
FOLK Song
Cherry ORCHARD

Very rural!

All four links were eventually predicted, but there were no additional bonus points under the two-minute rule and precious few points awarded anyway! Don't worry, this is a five-week month, so you'll have plenty of time to tune in to the thoughts of the Laird of the Links!

Well, I must say that this was a strange one to score. The Marmite Patrol made an early strike with bridgenut appearing first on the scene and claiming CHERRY ORCHARD as the first hit. I thought that things were going well, but then there was a long hiatus with many of the big hitters scoring zero points until Entrant #23 and JMR27 claimed GROUNDSWELL as the second hit. An hour went by before merched marched in with FOLK SONG and Link No. 3 hit the dust.

After an enormous passage of time, the penultimate entrant, kettledrum, arrived on the scene to predict FARM YARD and the final link had been found. This happened at one minute to eleven on Saturday night and it is surprising that one of the links could have survived so long. For that reason, I declare kettledrum �Hot Shot of the Week�. Well Done!

We welcome newcomers GK Fanatic, dd47, marie34 & magseegee, most of whom were able to score one point and show the others how it�s done.

Amazing. Apart from, possibly, ground swell, they don't look that hard. Oh well, zero points to kick off with - it can ony get better (well, at least no worse!). Well done gen2 for deceptively difficult links and well done, too, all those who scored.

Thank you crofter and gen2, I'm chuffed to have predicted one of the links after getting zero on my first attempt last month. Congrats to the others also, and good luck to everyone for next week.

Thank you, thank you , thank you Crofter! Almost as good as winning EV ! All is now forgiven over 'tectonic plate' and I won't mention it again. I'm going to enjoy being Hotshot of the Week - until next week: it makes a very nice change after having been holder of the Wooden Spoon for umpteen weeks.

I can't believe that I actually got one right and it's the one that Christiana said was the 'hard' one!
Perhaps it's going to be:
1 the first week, 2 the second week, 3 the third week - you get my drift? Could end up cleaning the slate that way.
Mr. O. is a bit down in the mouth, he was sure his 'yard work' was in the running as, quoth he 'I do enough of it.'
You've started off well Gen2 and no doubt you'll keep it up. Thanks once again to Crofter, the flirt - (Hey! Alibobs said it first) and his trusty abacus. Thanks to all who took part and made it 'fun' while it lasted.

(I hope I am not breaking any rules here by making comments whilst still the setter.)

Most ABers would appear be a bunch of urbanites or at least ruralphobic. An alternative link I had in mind was Barn Yard and nobody suggested that either - Where were you all brought up - high-rise flats? Come on - get your green wellies muddy - take a trip to the countryside.

I must admit, Ground Swell was probably forefront in my brain because it was an answer in a crossword I had recently completed (Most likely the D.T.). Cherry Orchard was an attempt to add a bit of culture (Chekhov) to what is otherwise a trivial bit of fun. The other two were just answers I fancied.

Next week though? Will it be more of the same? Or will I take a different tack and confuse you all again? Will I choose link-words with few options to increase the scoring or will I opt for variety? Wait and see.

In any case, let me add my congratulations to bridgenut, JMR27, kettledrum & merched.


NB No further correspondence will be entered into regarding my selection of link words.
