10a elect
agree the first three but but think "about" for the other one
Sorry KMC - I didn't read you question properly.
Chambers definitions:
plump: to give all one's votes without distribution
(the) elect: those chosen or set apart......ie the cream

Ianmunt - Yes I thought of about, but could not see why that was over, whereas aloft is.

Why ten though?

Kettledrum - great explanation..at least my basic logic was right

Thanks to you both

K
I went for ten too. I assumed that it was because ten backwards is 'net' and net is what you get after taxes etc, i.e what 'comes back' to you. It's also what you 'make' i.e a net profit.
Hi km - I reckon 'About' looks stronger:

About . . . . practically / almost
A bout = a series (eg of showers)
An over in cricket = a series of 6 balls
