trying to graduate from ordinary cryptics to enigmatic variations - a barred crossword (no. 767) from the sunday telegraph. It is evil! I don't even know where to start - can anyone help? Thanks in advance
Since no one has answered you, Physics Girl, I'll chip in with my suggestion.
I don't know this crossword , but if it's anything like the barred crossword I DO do, the Mephisto in The Times, the one thing you'll definitely need is a good dictionary. Chambers being the dictionary of choice.
Other than that I'd just suggest you post some of the clues for the longer lettered answers to get you going !
32 across. masa (dough) wordplay is ma (mother) getting a (one) so letter 's' is not indicated in wordplay, so entry is maas (s in the perimeter)
29 across jance(i)
I think these are correct only just started
Agree with the previous postings but to help you with this one --- what needs hightlghting can be found in the first and last rows, one word in the top row and one in the bottom, both of which run across the two answers in those rows. The unclued entries are characters from what you need to highlight and the unclued letetrs in the outer perimeter are the original French names for those characters. Think children's T.V. and a famous singer!!
You don't have to have a letter in each of the perimeter cells.
many thanks for the tips and solutions. Getting there now - it was an exaggeration saying I didn't have a clue as the answers given fit in with a couple I thought I knew. A steep learning curve but we all need to start somewhere, Quizmonkey! Should stick to quantum physics, it's easier
novalis (if your still on this thread) I have just completed, thanks to your help, but 28 down is only a 4 letter word not 5 as printed or am I missing something ? mm
