Algebra. The number is x. X-1 + 3X divided by 4 = 11. Multiple everything by 4 to get rid of the divides. 4X -4 + X + 3 = 44. 5X = 44 + 4 - 3 5X = 45 , so X = 9. See I do remember something from school!

The corect answer was 42
42 - 1 = 41, 41 + 3 =44, 44 divided by 4 =11, 11-1 =10

ok. It depends how you read it. I read it as one less + 3 more divided by four. i.e. 1x + 3x/4 whereas the answer has (1+3)x/4. I think my answer is better. where is he going to find 42 talented men!

It seems it is not the original wording to the riddle it was originally about a lady called Gwen looking for hansome men,and if you do the riddle backwards it works as well

11x4 =44
44-3 =41
41+1 =42
