The word 'van' can mean 'fore' or 'front' as in vanguard, hence van could be fore or front, so in acryptic van, van, van, becomes forefront. Hope that helps

OK I get the fore and front thing but why three lots of van?

Well basically 'van' also means 'forefront' - so the third definition/synonym is the other two put together
