1a Bush as before defying odds twice gets equivalent of 'yes' (4) Answer is UHUH, but two problems: 1) Chambers has UH-HUH=yes, UH-UH=no 2) 'Bush defying odds'=(B)U(S)H, 'twice' gives UHUH. What does 'as before' bring to the party? Any suggestions?

Having completed the crossword, I'm sure the answer must be uh-uh even though Chambers has it = no. Like you, I don't understand how 'as before' fits in. Perhaps someone will enlighten us.
I took it to be Bush Bush ( i.e as before/ditto) defying the odds (BS) = UH x 2 (twice) = UH UH
I think the 'as before' refers to defy meaning discard (obs). The 'yes' is just a mistake.
