I looked up the cast of characters in the Iliad and he was listed as Aias with Ajax in brackets !!!! As the question was put describing him as a Greek hero it SHOULD be Aias but I bet its Ajax they are looking for........I'll sleep on it and decide in the morning. Thanks for staying up to respond !!!!

In Collins (which is the one they seem to use) it gives Ajax, .... a Greek hero of the Trojan war etc.
I have gone for Ajax.

Didn't know about ALAS, I just put the obvious AJAX.

It was Aias not Alas but ........."alas" it may be that shes devious. I've risked Ajax as its the obvious ?
