Thought I'd start a new thread to check out one of two of my answers as I don't want to 'give anything away' to those still working on them. I have almost finished but need to check 4 I can't quite make sense of.
16) Lots of relaxing games. Is this 'loots'? I have loo?s
32 Actor has large plants. I have reest (from trees)
20d. Rope for hanging king. I am guessing 'thaler' possibly from 'lather' but can' really relate it to the clue
30a Is this 'ernest'? Was toying with 'trione' for the alloys but couldn't make it fit with the letters I have (?rn?s?)
If I am going to post it, it needs to be today so all help gratefully received.

Hi Christiana . I've only just started on this today, but to try and answer some of your queries :
16ac is lotos as games changed to loots
32ac (Oliver) Reed plus "s" for has
20dn is halter changed to thaler
30ac I have Ernest for the moment as a change to ternes.

My problem at the moment is with 23ac histrio trying to fit in with 25dn which now comes out as R?ASS
Hi Christiana..
From memory..
31a I had TREES..REEST

and 25d ROTAS..ROAST
Question Author
Thanks for your explanations on 30, 16 and 20. I have roast for 25 down i.e. collapse = rot+ as = rotas (courses).

This gives ree?t which I assumed was trees, but then can't get anywhere with the actor. Will check this final part again. I'm not sure reeds qualify as large plants.
Question Author
Hi Slaney, our posts crossed. Yes, that's what I had. Just stumped trying to equate 'trees' with an actor.
Question Author
Success! Tree is the name of an actor manager of times gone by. Herbert Beerbohm Tree. So I think I can wrap it up now. Thanks Slaney and Ulysses for your help and support.
Trying to remember my justification !

I think there was an actor called Sir Herbert Tree..
Beerbohm Tree was a famous Victorian (?) actor.

Thanks for the explanation of 32ac and 25dn I have now completed !!!
Snap..
Good luck !
Our paths crossed !
Yes, he was an actor-manager.
A Glimpse of Mercury has just clicked as well ---- H G (Wells) !
Have finished! Although found the top RH corner very tricky and cannot quite justify my answers fully. At least the grid is complete. And my answers agree with everyone else on this thread, so fingers crossed. Wil probably compile a list of queries and post it tomorrow.
Goodnight all
Question Author
Yes, finished and posted mine. It was the bottom left I found the most tricky though the top right had its moments. I don't guarantee that I can even remember how I reached one or two of them, but managed to justify all answers to some degree at the time. It's a good feeling, though, to get it done, isn't it.
I agree with Novalis - I can only find 14 answers involving 'time travel'

Has anyone managed to identify the elusive fifteenth, or has it slipped through a worm-hole into a parallel universe ?

Cruciverbalist
Question Author
Likewise, - can only see 14
Thanks Christiana !

C
Kept looking for the elusive fifteenth but agree with Cruciverbalist about its mysterious disappearance. Probably went away at warp factor 14 or 15.
Question Author
Perhaps it got 'timed' out!
..... you don't mean Number 15 is in the 'sin-bin' ?!

Or did 'Rustic' just get 'teed off' with it?
That reminds me............. I used to have a pair of golf socks, but then I got a hole in one.
Found myself chuckling at that last one. Nearly as bad as the pirate joke - why are pirates pirates? Because they AARR (this last needs to be said in amusing pirate-type voice).
I can only see 14 shifted clues. Would appreciate some confirmation of some answers as I have no confidence in mine. So, for a start
6d ICTAL (TICAL) ? Why?
Excepting the definition bit, how do I justify VIRINO for 11a? What did you put as the last letter and why (27a) ?

My answers are mostly semi-logical guesses and fit in with each other, but I can only understand parts of the cryptic reasoning. PLease don't laugh if some of them are wrong!
Won't be submitting as have no confidence in some of my answers.
Thanks
