might as well start a thread on this week's ev. So, how's everyone doing? I got off to a blinding start and then ground to a halt after about 12 clues. Could someone confirm 10 as IMP(E)TRATION and explain the cryptic part for me? Thanks as ever! Hope you all had a nice weekend.

I haven't started yet. Was out all day yesterday and only just got in today. Still finishing S.Tel cryptic. But had a look at 10. I think it's actually Impetratory. with P as the extra letter. Anagram of 'merita' plus 'tory for the MP
Try 'lassi'

aha! it all makes sense now .... thanks, you two
Hi!
Totally disastrous so far! Newsagents did not receive S.T. magazines until 11:30 on Sunday by which time I was at a friend's family occasion.
Collected magazine late yesterday in between bouts of illness brought on by something I'd eaten on Sunday.
Had lie-in this morning to recuperate -- and had 8 appeals waiting in the post!
Made a bit of a start and unclued letters so far are ( * if I haven't go it and / where I think words end ):-
*qu***/*ne/p*u*/*ou*/x/sine/of/*u*/of***eno*. Think it may be square one plus four x sine of...., but could be totally wrong!
May be a / towards the end.
Think/hope if I can get 1 and 36 I can crack it.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Will look again after "Eggheads"

Novalis! Hope you feel much better. Got very excited on reading your post as thought I had some of your missing letters but on checking realised it was not to be.
14a ???I?TE
25d D?????
are driving me mad.
Question Author
square one plus four x sine of sum of ???ENO?
possibly?
Hi!
Thanks for your good wishes. Was thinking along those lines as well. Missing letter for 30 is "c" ( and there are two of them ). Just had a call from a friend. His quiz team is short so I'm going along to help them. I;ll keep working on it and take it with me to see if they can come up with anything.
Hi, all ..
Struggling with the last 7 ..think I may have gone wrong somewhere
Square one plus four x sine- I have too, with c??eno? at end.
14. Independent couple touring centre of Edinburgh take in fringe..
I think this must be (F)IMBRIATE....I independent, mate=couple , and "b" centre of Edinburgh but can't fully explain.
Hi, Yes I thought fimbriate, too but couldn't explain parts of it. Still struggling. Don't have 25 yet. Trying to resolve answers for 18 and 35 both of which seem reasonable, but one must be wrong as they don't co-ordinate at light 35
I get the plus four part but confused over the square one, as I have unadided for 8 which I entered as 'naided' - IDADEN, leaving a 'u' not an 'n'
Whoops, meant 'unaided'
Hi Christiana
8. I had to enter Gulf States with daughter lacking assistance..
UAE United Arab Emirates around ID plus d for daughter leaves the "n" unclued, so entered as UAIDED.
Thanks, that seems better. Missed that I hadn't accounted for the daughter. I've got Tree toad for 35 but thought 18 was going to be focussed on with the two 'o's omitted. Is either or both of these something else, do you know.
For 18 .Fellow angry about education with unwavering interest.
.FI(X)ED RATE
F fellow, angry irate, around ed education.
Thanks. I was using cussed on for the angry bit. Will soldier on.

I've also gone for UAIDED and had thought about FIMBRIATE but couldn't completely see why. I agree with your reasoning, and also wonder where the other letters come from. Unless touring centre refers to the R, but that leaves the B and I unaccounted for. Hmm.
If you do "square one plus four" this gives 25, so is this the highlighted entry?
Question Author
Oh, also thought 35 was TREE T(O)AD, same as Christiana.
centre of Edinburgh is "B"
to take i.e. recipe is "R"
and in is "I"
Thank you,ulysses..I hadn't appreciated that "in" could be "I".
Last bit may be.....x sine of sum of clue nos.
