In bridge parlance you fold your cards when you concede ie do not win any more tricks. I don't know if this is any help but it is a bit late.....

34a Legless, I think. One meaning of 'mortal' is 'very drunk' as is 'legless'. I confess I did not immediately see the 'traditional story' element...still don't at the moment!

Thanks, Quizmonster. Like you, I've been trying to see the story connection for legless - I think it must be legend (less the 'end'). Anyway, thanks for everyone's help - I can now send it off.
