the credit is given to Edmund Ruffin on the 12th April 1861 when he fired the opening shot of the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charlseton Harbour

Thank you, Paddywak. That site seems to confirm who it was.
An fact about this action i found interesting was that even though the bombardment lasted about 35 hours, noboby was actually killed as a direct result of the action. The casualties on both sides (2 union 1 confederate) all occurred due to the missfiring of cannon
