I am being driven to distraction by 55 down. The clue is "Sun. offering". The answer is three letters the first of which is almost certainly S and the last ought to be R. The clue giving the R (61 across) is "Former Russian State" which I think must be "SSR". The clue to 58 across, the last letter of which would give the middle letter of 55 down, is "Rose's Fellow* and I have "ABI?". I am pretty certain of the "ABI". I can only think of "ABIE" from an old radio play "Abie and Rosemary" which I've never heard of before I searched.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sun. is short for Sunday. An offering on a Sunday is a service abbreviated to ser.

I'm obviously not on the same wavelength as the compiler! Many thanks to you both.
