thank you for your answers, but really don't get them!
Deiform seems like it should be the answer but where does 'buckle' fit in?
Both scrabbler and seranader fit but again, can't see why they would be the answer.
Am I having a blonde moment?

Deform is buckle- holding i (one) makes it sacred De i form
You would seranade a fair maiden trying to win her hand
A serenader may try to win a fair maiden's hand ... and it does fit pattern of downward clues giving S?R?N?D?R

My only query with serenader would be that the clue stipulates 'Player' while a serenader usually 'sings' to try to win over the lady (or man)
Is it this site (again)? It took me 3 goes to post that last answer - and I can't spell serenade!
Usually accompanied on guiter / lute or similar
