Legend has it that the robin received its red breast from trying to remove the bloody thorns from Christ's head at the Crucifixion.
In Scandanavian folklore they say a swallow flew around him.
The stork is also believed to have flown around the Cross of Christ with compassion and is therefore thought to be unlucky to kill.
