Following my query to The Times about the validity of submitting facsimiles, or copy grids, of puzzle solutions, a few might be interested in their reply, which follows:
"Thank you for your email. I don't see any reason why you can't submit both solutions. I wish you luck.
Kind Regards
Sacha Hopkirk Customer Liaison Executive"
So there you are..........Why did I fret so?! Mike
I don't quite understand your question. Are you asking if you can submit more than one copy of your solution, so that your chances of winning a prize are greater? That certainly seems to be the way Sacha Hopkirk has read it.
But originally I thought you meant just one computer print taken from the newsprint.
If you can send in a computer copy taken from the newspaper that would mean I could just copy my friends blank grid and fill it in without buying the paper which hardly seems fair.
"I try to complete both Times Jumbo Crosswords on Saturdays: that is the General Knowledge (times2), and the Cryptic.
I purchase only one newspaper.
May I submit one solution on a facsimile grid?"
Does this make sense? I have two different solutions but only one grid; thus the question.
I would not dream of multiple submissions, and so naturally I had to ask the concomitant question about copy grids. I agree that there appears to be room for abuse; thus the question. Suggest you enquire yourselves; perhaps it will elicit a more satisfying answer.
Mike
I wonder if a letter to the crossword editor would elicit a more definitive response. I belong to the Times Crossword Club and frequently submit answers to both Jumbos on-line.
I have always sent in Saga crosswords on a computer copy, and to date, I have won a consolation prize (Electronic Dictionary), and a random selection prize of a Bloomsbury Concise English Dictionary. There has been no query from Saga.
