I agree with you MrsMop. Even wheb i see the answers I cannot always see how the clue has been devised!!!
Did you know that the answers to that crossword are on the internet before midday? Takes all the challenge out of it, and the clues are so convoluted that I don't bother even trying now!!

Would suggest ower for 27a. It's the Scottish form of over and the Waverley novels are by a Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott.
