I think i have worked out which national trail it is but i'm struggling with the broadcaster. Can anybody help ?

He was a cricket commentator, but much more....poet, opponent of Apartheid, alcoholic (said with authority...he stayed at my parents' home and drank a bottle and a half of brandy after commentating on a Gillette Cup match between Kent and Suffolk, where I am told he saw off another bottle) and all-round hero. Famously, he wrote over 50 books, always in the third person. But when he refused to go to South Africa, his explanation in the Guardian was written in the first person.
