Letters (speculative) AM?S??D ; looks like it
must be AMASSED, but why? Amassed=gathered;
hack=ed? but where does setter come in?

This clue should be 'straight' (no extra letters in wordplay).
Any help much appreciated.

Hi both, I'm missing something here, 4d I have "hiccough" and 23d "labrador". Don't really understand what it means by "clashes in the grid" Any advice gratefully accepted. I have worked out the theme of the puzzle though.
