missing clues

Does anyone know the quiz where you are given a total sum in �.s.d. and all clues are like the following:- An old bicycle. A kind of pig. A mans name. etc. I can remember some but not all. Help please.

Hi harkatlisten. I was the person who submitted this quiz to the Saturday Telegraph in 1996 when they were inviting their readers to submit unique type puzzles. It was printed 3 weeks later and I received the princely sum of �25!
I can't remember exactly how i compiled it as it was off the top of my head so to speak and, obviously, adjustments can be made.
Here,however,is roughly how it goes. The task was to solve the clues,each answer being a monetary value pre-decimal. The sum when answered correctly totalled EXACTLY �20 0s 0d.
1. Venus, Pluto, Mars, etc three farthings
2. Leather worker tanner
3. Groat fourpence
4. King and queen two sovereigns
5. Austrian currency shilling (schilling)
6. Half a nicker ten shillings
7. Worn on the head crown
8. Florin two shillings
9. Type of pig guinea - �1 1s 0d
10. singing voice tenor - tenner
11. ailing cephalopod �6 - sick squid!!
12. Old mode of transport penny farthing

If you add these up, you'll find the total is �20!

I had another one published a few weeks later. I'll post it here without the answers!

The task is to solve the equations:-

1 1 1 = 3
2 2 2 = 3
3 3 3 = 3
4 4 4 = 3
5 5 5 = 3
6 6 6 = 3
7 7 7 = 3
8 8 8 = 3
9 9 9 = 3
The following mathematical signs can be placed ANYWHERE on the left hand side of each equation:-
decimal point, add, subtract, divide, multiply and square root to make each equation equal 3. It's not overcomplicated and the decimal point only ever moves ONE place.
Hardest are 5,6,7 and 8.
There is, however, a fascinating twist to this puzzle, so if anybody knows what it is, please don't spoil it for everyone.

I can do them all using your rules with one exception - for that I find I need a cube root!.

dundurn I can assure you without exception that cube root is not required to solve any of the equations!

As predicted, stuck on 5,6,7 & 8. I have an inclin about the twist at the end but will give it a while longer.

A clue for 5,6 and 7 is that the decimal point is required!

5 mutiplied by point 5 is 2 point 5. add point 5 is 3!

Sorry, not silent by choice - work called! Yes I'm stuck on 8. Cube root 8 =2 +8/8 = 3 but if cube root not available ..........

I'm old, but I'm decisive - when I say bed, I mean bed! What a corker to wake up to. Definitely nothing springs to mind!! - thinking..........................................
