I have 'tirade' and 'mean' as well but I am not very happy with them
17ac I am thinking 'poorest' but cannot justify it
and I am still stuck on 23d and 24d and am thinking of 'charms' for 23d but do not know why??

Also agree Mean for 12a ... Mean = plan, Men = soldiers + a.
