Maybe the question setter got it wrong. I agree Melville is the most probable answer.

I thought that as well papaleekie. Not Shirley Maclean but Alisair Maclean I suppose. Not very good clues are they? It could be 'not' any number of Shirleys. I'm sure there are probably writers with the surnames 'Temple' or 'Bassey' for example
