Full clue is "Excessive treatment on mark for cancellation", and I assume second part is justified by ...

on = over + mark for cancellation = kill, but agree it's a bit loose.

Philatelists would have no trouble with this clue. In the old days when the primary purpose of the postmark was to deface the postage stamp the cancellation was known as "a killer". Looking at some of my post today I think the practice is still in use!
