I assume it is "paid the price" and it accounts for "settled"
but what about the self-made bed?
( maybe paid fthe price for your own mistakes?)

Unless it refers to the saying, "You've made your bed, now lie in it" which equates to "paid the price", as in " I paid the price for my mistake"?
