Thank you both. The crossword is from a book of Times Crosswords which contains one puzzle from each of the years since publication began. A friend of mine bought the book and we have tried to do one every week since. I think we are now down to the last four. Some are reasonable and others, like this one, are much more difficult but they have been great fun to do. I still have some unfinished here so may be back tomorrow for more help.
Could 23d be Joust? as medieval jousting area was called.
