It could be traipse or trample :
traipse means to trudge which means a heavy or weary walk
trample means to tread roughly underfoot
Both definitions above in Chambers

I would favour trample. The two defintions of traipse and trample from Chambers are below and trample has a more direct closeness to the clue.
