Does anyone know why a watch used to be called a kettle? The only clue I have is it's something to do with fire and a fob....
Any help is very much appreciated!

It's rhyming slang - "Kettle & hob" - "Fob" (watch)

This also - Cassell Dictionary of Slang has -

...(mid 19C+) a pocket watch; thus 'red kettle', a gold watch, 'white kettle', a silver watch...(1920s+) a wrist watch...[the original large circular pocket watches resembled kettles]
