There is a real answer to this one. A similar riddle goes: Q: What has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening? A: Man. Four legs - crawling as a baby. Two legs - walking. Three legs - walking with a stick.

On that basis, Lodekka, is the answer "a couple"? They spend their early adult years 'climbing up the hill of life' together until they're into middle age. At that point, one has a leg amputated and - in the declining years of their lives - they come 'downhill' with one supporting the other. (I'm only joking!)
