hmm... maybe "back to front" refers to backing out i.e. ones back would be leading and therefore at the front, so to speak (and if that's the correct interpretation.. it's an awful clue)

I'm glad I'm not the only one think it's the clue, not me. These Sunday Telegraph cryptics are getting really annoying, & it seems to be simply carelessness or laziness than an effort to be obscure.

I did think it might have something to do with being STARTER backs, but although that makes some kind of sense in being "back to front", there's no indication in the clue where the extra "E" comes from.

if it was just once in a while, I wouldn't mind, but there's at least one clue like this in this particular puzzle every week now, & it takes away any pleasure in competing.
