I'm down to my last two:
Old vagrant polishing off a couple in a bar - there's hubris (9) AR-OG-N--
One's can, crooked, inebriate (5) AN--N
I'm sure the answers must be ARROGANCE and ANCON, but please can anyone explain why. Thanks.

Arrogance.....Old vagrant= Rogue .

Less (polish off a couple) UE = ROG

In A RANCE - A bar ......AR ROG ANCE
Possibly it is ANCON in the sense of an 'elbow bender' an inebriate.

On can - crooked
I haven't started mine yet so you could help me by advising if Arrogance goes where 3d would normally be?

Thanks and regards K

Thank you very much for your explanations, kayakamina. I can now concentrate on doing the clue for *26.
I've got Arrogance at 29 ac (I think that's the right numbering - left side, three up!), interlinking with the 'c' of Ancon.
Thanks.
