HI Spriggins & mamyalynne - I saw that, but because of "stiffening" in the (non-cryptic) clue, I'm not so sure - or am I trying too hard?! :-)

...I've got vague references to 'Stenting' as a stiffening material...

A friend is also stuck on the stiffening. The letters are definitely S?E?T?U? as the U comes from OLDUVAI GORGE a place in Tanzania

well i agree the stiffening is a little confusing unless the refers to the fact that adoublet is two lines in a spectrum thereby strengthening it??
