Why is the answer to 3 down Pumpkin?

Family follows without large fruit.

I've sent it in, but can't see why it's that answer, and I do like to see the reason!

I could understand the 'kin' part and see the l for large reason, but what has pump to do with it?

I think the clue was Family follows without large fleshy fruit.
Fleshy = Plump without L ..large
