Only thing I can come up with is Assail, is your E correct.

Thanks valerieb1254 don't know if you do this crossword but for 1d I have 'in extremes' (the last 'e' being the one that gives me my final letters) the clue to 1d being "In dire straits electronic mixer isn't working"- can't find a word that would give me the 'a' I need for assail.
