Do you have the answer to last week's 20d - "Dead? About to be" ? It was the source of much discussion on here.

That's what we thought, but still don't know why !!

How about C(entury) live ?
C = circa ( about ) + live ( be )
There was no problem with the second part of the clue:
c (about/circa) + live (to be).

The problem was with "Dead?". It was suggested that this was some obtuse reference to the death of Robert Clive (of India), but I'm sure I'm not the only one that was unconvinced......unless someone out there knows better.
It could be Latin, but my Latin is not up to it and I don't find it on Google.

Every year, my university magazine (which likes Latin) has a section recording the deaths of former students, The column is headed OLIM CLIVES
