Capital city of the region of Tuscany known to Italians as Firenze.

F**REN*A

I thought it was Florence but the A is from the second A in the answer to 26D, Independent sheikdom of the Persian Gulf, capital Manama which is Bahrain.

Can the answer be Florenca or is there a mistake in the crossword?

According to Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence

Florence (Italian: Firenze, Old Italian: Fiorenza, Latin: Florentia) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany.

Fiorenza would fit your grid, but I am no so sure it is the required answer.
More correct spelling is Bahrein

Thanks Rollo and Sedge for your help. Yes you can spell it as Bahrein but I thought that was a minority way. I have opted for Bahrein anyway.
