1888, which is written as MDCCCLXXXVIII.

It has 13 characters and is the only 13-character Roman number between 1 and 2009.

2888 will have 14 characters, though (MMDCCCLXXXVIII), so if you're still about then (unlikely, I know), you'll have a different answer!

Funny enough, it was similar to a question in the pub quiz last week! Took us absolutely ages to work it out then, though!
