8d. Could be Teethes
5 back
8teethes/creches
5. back or each.
I have teethes for 8d, as 4a is T(EA-CH)EST. This leaves 5d as E?C?, which suggests EACH but I don't see the wordplay on that one.
5d, Each (each way bet)
dr b - I have heard of an each-way bet but that's about it (?)
oh, these obscure British terms - I am slowly learning them all :) Thanks mac44, dinkyp.
dr b - they are not obscure British terms - in case you hadn't noticed, it's our language and your country has been responsible for most of the corruption, like omitting the "u" from colour, like driving on the pavement, which is where we walk over here.

Here you can read all about each-way bets.
big dave, well of course I was joking, hence the :). You speak English, I speak American. i am part of an online group over here that works the Sunday Times & then discusses. You should hear some of the whining (whinging?) when we have to deal with a "Britishism." My response is always, hey guys, it's their puzzle.
Dr b - you should know me well enough by now. Our British sense of humour is renowned the world over for being incomprehensible to foreigners. (Better that way than to be, like the Germans, renowned for having no sense of humour.) I was, as they say over here, pulling your leg !!
gah! 30 years of watching Monty Python and still you are inscrutable to me!
