1d) Soothsayer with noisy implement. ?u?u? I know the answer is augur, but could someone explain where the noisy implement comes into it? Thank you.

Augur is also a type of drill.
The drill is auger which sounds like augur hence "noisy"

I should have asked my hubby ... he's the practical one!
Yes, usual spelling in UK is auger, so novalis is of course correct with 'sounds like'.
