16a anagram of the abbreviaton for Welsh plus HAS WON PEA
33a anagram of TENOR plus what you say in pain
2d R is wrong
5d S is wrong, what is chemical symbol for Tin? Tatties and?
6d N is wrong
7d H is wrong, again first part of clue relates to chemical symbol
9d E is correct, what is the abbreviation for EDGAR, and if you are searching what are you looking ..............
Tried to be helpful, but without giving the acyual answers so you benefit from solving the actual answers yourself.
BTW OOGAMOUS is corrrect, do you remember the Mr Magoo who was shortsighted? Then you can work out the wordplay.

25d is not really a good clue, in my opinion the last word should be singular. If you look in Chambers for the definition of that word, then look up the defition of that word. The entry in the grid is immediately above.

22, about can be either RE or CIRCA, you can guess which this time, what is 6 in Roman numerals and abbreviation for large.
27 Good guess, but Australian Capital Territory is more germane.
36, This is a realy nice clue, what is the abbreviation for APPARENTLY, then a word meaning jump, followed by a word meaning concealed,
39 the answer is a person from Greek mythology, first 5 letters mean preferred, or what you do when you vote for someone, last 2 are the abbreviation for artist.
41 An artistic word meaning LOok in a shortened word meaning cottage.
23 Shorten LARk, what is the abbreviation for caught, then anagram of ERNE. What is another word for someone who steals, think along the lines of legal terms.
26 C= constant, so remove that from CAPTIOUS and what do you think "niggling" means, it is actually an anagram indicator.
29 Having trouble hinting at this one, but one can mean A or I or AN, C = clubs as in cards, then who are the 4 bridge players final answer is what we dread during this cold weather.
Matakari, I am very happy to help, I just hope my typing is up to the task. If you are new to cryptic crosswords, then you have chosen a quite difficult one to start with, especially as there is always an extra twist to this one.

Sorry Matakari, I missed out a hint for 38a, it's also the name of part of the Thames, near Oxford I believe, first letter = 3rd letter and 2nd letter = 4th letter. Your N is incorrect.
You are OK with your earlier post in terms of the quotation! Look at the MYNAS NOISIER and the corners, which will also help with the quotation. Ask yourself what cruciverbalists ar interested in!!!

All your answers are correct except for DOMINIC. The clue says "comically stripped and dressed", this is the cryptic part and means you remove the outer letters of c)omicall(y and then anagram it. The result is Don ?????? " a fictional priest".

Had you noticed the relevance of the title to the number of the crossword? They also represent the initials of the quotations author. The 4 unclued lights are all names beginning with the authors middle initial. Had you noticed the symmetry of their positions in the grid?

I have got the C name for 20A...34A and 28D are still elusive, but they should soon fall into place! The priest is still giving me something to think about. What is the letter representation for the Roman numeral for 1900?
You are correct with another word in the quotation being "words". Google that with all you have already.
The names at 28d and 34d are anagrams of each other.
How about we try something else for the PRIEST, first three letters are a river in CAMbridge followed by not very well (another 3 letters) then a circle/o, once you've go that Google
GE is a goddess (Earth Goddess actually), so 46 is not BALEEN, what is a word meaning nude, that is ?A?E follow that by GE and there you are for that answer.
4d is Rose Oil and there are several ways of spelling that one is Attar, another a Turkish empire, minus MAN resulting in the answer.
35d is difficult to hint at, but it is a dialect for asparagus. I'd go for (s)mall seat (pew) swallowing a (r)iver.
