Cluny Castle is near Aboyne and there is a village called Cluny in Fife which is the county (or kingdom) where Markinch is situated.
There is a place called Coul not far from Markinch
...Coull, a collier hamlet in Markinch parish, Fife, 1 3/4mile NW of Markinch town.

...Also "tepid sounding" works ('Cool')
