Whats the only question would you ask?

A man is driving down a road,needs to get to his destination.He gets to a fork in the road,doesn't know which way to go.Two men are at the fork of the road.One is a liar,the other tells the truth.What is the,one and only question you'd ask both of them to get where you want to?

If asking the liar he will lie about what the honest man would answer.

If asking the honest man he will tell the truth about the liar's answer. BB

There have been many variations and elaborations of this simple version over the years.
For example, there are triplets, one of whom always lies, one always tells the truth, and the third alternates between lying and truth-tellling. And it can get much more complicated than that!

Can someone explain how the logic works please? That I know it works isn't a problem but my brain has never quite 'got' it. Even with the explanation in the labyrinth!

if I were to ask the other man which way to go what wold he say?

For heaven's sake,stokemaverick, don't you know how puzzles and riddles work? No-one has to explain why. You take the hypothetical situation and solve the puzzle represented by it. Calm down.

Chinadoll, it works like this:

You ask "What would your mate say was the right road?"

If you are addressing the liar then he would lie about the truth that his mate would give.

If you are addressing the truthteller then he would tell you truthfully of the lie his mate would give.

Either way you get the wrong road and take the other.

Now try the version I gave involving triplets. Same principle.

There is no real question,you were already driving to your destination,a map was already in hand,coming to the fork was just a momentatarily a obstacle,why would you start out on a journey blind.
