Once again, I'm stuck for one. 17 down. Most of old castle a youth demolished. (8 letters). I've got R?I?A?E?

Wallacia, thank you, this looks interesting. I try to complete cryptic crosswords without reverting to anything other than a dictionary and thesaurus but I find I'm getting stuck more often these days - probably because compilers are using more obscure word sources. Cheers, Andy

Back to earlier posting - where does castle come in?

old castle = ruins, so most of it means get rid of last letter, leaving you with RUIN
