Olive is actually a dog but steps in for Santa when Blitzen gets hurt.

Santa only started out with 8 reindeer but discovered Rudolph while delivering presents on that fateful foggy Xmas Eve.  Rudolph (very nearly called Rollo, then Reginald) joined the team in 1939 thanks to Robert L May.

But stoo_pid, in the song about Rudolph, it goes "Olive the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names"!
