MM Links December (week 3)

We have now safely arrived at the third week of the reign of “Princess Di” (aka grannydi). Last week, you did far too well. Can I make the challenge harder? Or am I doomed to be ever so predictable?
To continue my saga: In the 1970’s I took up golf and over a period of several years managed to win quite a few trophies and got my handicap down to a reasonably respectable 13. Unfortunately, it’s now slowly creeping back up, but each year I keep telling myself I will get it down again. That’s the reason one keeps going back to the game. I was asked to be Lady Captain in 1995, and from there I eventually got involved with County Golf and did two years as Captain of Durham County Ladies Golf. Very rewarding it was too. I am still involved with committees at the golf club and together with our Chair of Marketing ran ‘Taster’ sessions for ladies this summer and added 23 new members to the club role, which gave the club much needed revenue.

I am a bit of a bionic woman these days. Arthritis, unfortunately, runs in the family and I have had both of my hips replaced. I can manage to walk the golf course but anything more vigorous, like dancing, I find very difficult. I deem myself to be have been relatively lucky: my mother has had three replacements and my sister four. It makes it an interesting experience going through security at airports. I tend to walk through and automatically spread my arms for a body search. I was caught out once, when the machine had been turned down because of the volume of passengers. I spread my arms as usual and nothing happened. I felt a bit of an idiot, but it makes a mockery of security when it doesn’t alert the staff to so much hidden metal. After all, I could have been a bomber!!
Mum’s love of gardening has been passed onto all three of her children, and (like her) I have, over the years, supplied vegetables and fruit for the family, and the deep freeze is kept well filled with produce for use in the winter months. However, the garden isn’t all down to fruit and veg and we do have a colourful floral display most times of the year. I particularly love it during Spring, when the early bulbs are in full bloom and the other plants are bursting into leaf. Hubby now works under instruction (at his own request) ever since he hoed up my newly emerging parsley seedlings. He’s more a destroyer than a creator and is in his element cutting things down -- just as well the garden is big enough to keep him busy. He hates having nothing to do.

As some of you may remember, Mum celebrated her 100th birthday this summer. She managed three parties:- family, friends and church. There were nearly 100 guests at the main party in the local golf club, and a good time was had by all, especially Mum. I was responsible for making the invitation cards and the cake; the latter causing some concern when it came to the decoration. I ended up buying a spray of flowers made in icing, simple but effective. The only trouble was, I had beaten the icing too much and it was rock solid; a chain saw was virtually needed to break through! Mum is an amazing lady who lives on her own, with the help of a carer who goes in 3 times a day. She still manages a game of bridge – and is not averse in telling her fellow players where they have gone wrong!! She and Dad taught Hubby and me to play bridge in the early 60’s and we have both enjoyed the game ever since, not sure that we would be up to crofter’s standard though.
Down to the business in hand! As far as my MM Links are concerned, needless to say, I shall follow the rule on word length adopted by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when crofter shall disclose my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past.
