The only one I can't explain today:

1 dn "Seat used by person of authority (4)"

I have put "SOFA", by why?

I can see "OFA" within "... person OF Authority", but where does the "S" come from?

Perhaps I'm totally wrong?!

Safe (seat)
I also thought safe seat as sofa made little sense.

Thanks, k. I did think of "safe" but why is that? What has it to do with person of authority?
OtR
the top politicians tend to have safe seats or if you are in a safe seat then you are in authority
I don't like the clue but it could be that a person in authority can select a 'safe' seat - such is their seniority.

OK - didn't think it would be as simple as that!
Just to throw this into the mixing bowl - I wondered if it could be a soft seat? Understand this is an option on Chinese trains .... maybe?
I think this is yet another misprint in The Times crossword clues.

I believe it should be "Seat used by persons of authority" i.e. personS OF Authority...
