Thanks to you both.

Had to revise 7d from "For the chop" to "Get the chop", but still don't understand 22a.
american writer must be Edgar Allan Poe, and times = X (arithmetic)

around must mean anagram in this case rather than the usual backwards instruction, but still doesn't seem quite right

I think you are right, but it's not the best of clues.
I think the "around" means mix up poe & x. I agree that it is a poor clue.
