Not sure where this question should go.... in a traditional 52 card deck, how many eyes in total are shown on the face cards

I may going mad but I thought this was usually a trick question and 42 is the wrong answer (ie. 4 suits, 3 picture cards, 2 heads, 2 eyes).

 

The reason I think this is because I thought that traditionally some of the people always face sideways and not forwards.  In my pack that is the Jack, Queen and King of Diamonds so 6 eyes are missing making it 36 eyes in total.

moose, if you were to take your 2 eyes, 2 heads, 3 picture cards and 4 suits that would give 48 eyes, so 42 would be with 6 missing anyway wouldnt it?

It's still 42, for the same reason as Moose! has given. As the total would be 48 when counting the 4 suits, 3 picture cards, 2 heads and 2 eyes.

surely only the royals have eyes eg King Queen and Knave. Two of the Knaves are one eyed, therefore 14 eyes
