With regard to 47, I remember in the 50s a chocolate bar called 'Fry's 5 boys'. This had a picture on the wrapper (and I think it was moulded into the chocolate as well, but not sure) of 5 boys' faces ranging from thoroughly miserable to absolutely delighted. Under each face was a word ending in 'ion' to express the emotion depicted. The only word I can remember exactly is 'satisfaction', but I'm pretty sure the first was desperation, so this might be your answer.

Have just Googled 5 boys (should've done it first). I'm wrong about satisfaction being one of the words but right about the answer - the first is desperation and the last is realisation.

That's brilliant Mike11111. I would never have got that answer . I can't remember that chocolate though I'm old enough!!!

It was first manufactured in1902 so was pretty dated even by the 50s. I think it had disappeared before the 60s came along. As you can see by the picture on the wrapper the boys are in very old-fashioned costumes.

Maybe I can't remember it because we never got chocolate when we were bairns ( in the thirties) My mother used to make Russian Toffee occasionally -it was scrumptious. It'll be interesting to see if my friends remember it.

They're 'avin' a larf ain't they? How many people have read Proust's 'A la recherche du temps perdu'? I thought that Fry's Five Boys was obscure enough, but this is taking the biscuit! (no pun intended)

Thank you both for your kind response. It was a pleasure to be of assistance. It's just that the older one gets, the more fixed the earliest memories become. One poster mentioned Russian toffee, which I can't remember, but I do remember cinder toffee (which can still be bought in specialist shops). Pure toffee seems to have gone out of fashion (bad for the teeth and fillings, I suppose). Anyone remember Penny Dainties?
