Thanks people, with a little help from yourselves I've just finished the above, is it just me, or was that a tough one this week?

If the Brain hurts Baldric then it has had proper exercise !! Too easy and it's not a challenge.....
was harder than normal , what did you put for 6a,
i put aarons rod
Yes it is Aarons Rod. Some have gone with Jacobs Rod, but.......
If it turns out to be Jacob's rod, I'll eat that hat redman's wearing...
did you do the tel gk on saturday
18d, did you put gilt or yilt
now that I'd pay to see....
LOL Lie-in-King !!
Gilt
Hi DrFilth - that's a new word to me, I knew 'Gilt' & checked with Chambers - "...(dialect) n - a young sow (in various conditions locally)..."

...Another case of personal choice & hoping one thought the same way as the compiler did!
itchymoti was at my house on saturday and he has done work on farms all his life.
he has never heard of that word and said how can you give a regional word answer if you don't know the region ?
Just taking a passing interest in Yilt and Gilt as I'm not doing that Xword myself, What was the exact wording of the Clue in the Telegraph ?
should have said , if they don't name the region they want.
18d Regional dialect for a young sow (4)

?I?T or in lower case ?i?t
Agreed & from your link -

http://books.google.c...ce=gbs_search_r&cad=1

As I said, I think we'll have to go with the one we each prefer & hope for the best...
sorry should have put he knew gilt but not yilt
So which one did you go for? :-)
According to this Websters American Dictionary which I have 'Yilt' is a variation of 'Gilt'
'Gilt in my Collins Dictionary stands for a Sow, especially one which has not had a litter.
'Yilt' is probably a slang word used in some regions but that is just a guess.
There's only one way to decide - fight!
i put gilt
