A man was driving a car, and by the time he reached the hotel he knew he was bankrupt.  How did he know?

Can anyone help me with this please?

he was playing Monopoly
Or, of course, he owned the hotel but didn't have insurance, and when he got to the hotel he saw that it had fallen down. Which actually fits the question better, because although there is a car counter in Monopoly, you don't "drive" it as the question suggests, you just move it round a board.
It's an old "lateral thinking" question.  It should read "a man pushed a car...............".  The answer is that he was playing Monopoly.
He owned the hotel and something bad happened, nothing to do with monopoly.
