I'd go for CLOP.

In two different dictionaries Clop is listed as Sound of a horse's hoof striking the ground but no mention of this under Clip
chambers 11th edition gives
clop
of a horse's hoof-tread against a hard surface
with a clop
Question Author
many thanks I was leaning towards clop as clip has many other meanings
